A. M. Winklepleck, M.D., of Connersville, Indiana. Document on Winklepleck ancestry dated April 1, 1955, that he mailed to my mother, Ruth (Dean) Hartsell, in 1961.
J.D. attended the fall semester of 1930 at University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, majoring in Entomology (insects). He lived at 1005 W. Oregon St., Urbana, Ill, a few blocks east of the campus. He would take the train between Urbana and Mattoon. In January 1931 he was diagnosed with an ulcer of his left cornea. His doctor, who was in Chicago, said J.D. could continue college after his treatment, but J.D. chose not to continue. In the spring of 1931 J.D. was living in Whiting, Indiana, with his brother Theodore, at 1507 Brown Avenue (Theodore married Marcella in Aug. 1931). Sometime after this, J.D. went back home to the farm. We have a leter from Theodore to J.D. (back home on the farm) from 1507 Brown Ave. on June 27, 1933. We also have a letter from Ruth Dean to J.D. at this same address on Nov. 25, 1934. This address was close to where Ruth lived on Carolina Avenue. By Dec. 19, 1934, Ruth wrote to J.D. at 1722 Thorndale Ave., Chicago, Illinois, 32 miles north of Whiting, Indiana.
See the end of this web page for pictures and maps mentioned in the rest of this section.
Coy Ruth Dean was born Oct. 23, 1912 in Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana, about 3 miles north of Odon. She was the youngest child of James Francis & Mary (Winklepleck) Dean. Her siblings were Charles (b. 1904), Arthur (b. 1906), and Edith (b. 1910). They lived at the north central edge of Section 8, on the "Shafer Homestead". Shafer was the family of Ruth's maternal grandmother Barbara (Shafer) Winklepleck, and the house itself was called the Shafer Homestead. Ruth's father loved to fish.
Sep. 1918; Ruth age 5: Began attending Herron's school, almost a mile east of their
house. She walked to school. The family attended Pleasant Hill Church.
In 1918 there was an epidemic of Bird Flu. There were no vaccines at that time.
Mar. 31, 1919; Ruth age 6: Her father died of influenza.
Jan. 5, 1920: Ruth age 7: Her mother married Perry A. Smith. They lived at the Shafer
Homestead house. The 1920 Census shows "Perry A. and Mary M. Smith", Perry age 50 and
a farmer.
June 4, 1921; Ruth age 8: Her grandfather Benjamin F. Dean died. She probably had a
memory of him later on in life.
May 20, 1922; Ruth age 9: Her mother divorced Perry A. Smith.
Dec. 24, 1923; Ruth age 11: Her mother married Charles Benjamin Dean, Ruth's Uncle Charles,
brother of Ruth's father James F. Dean. They lived at the Shafer Homestead house.
1924; Ruth age 11-12: Her mother divorced Charles B. Dean.
1924; Ruth age 11-12: Before or after the divorce, the family moved to Whiting, Indiana.
It appears that Ruth's brothers Charles (age 20) and Arthur (age 18) got jobs at the
steel mill or oil refinery to support the family. The family lived at 1817 Caroline Avenue,
in the "Water Gardens" area on the west side of town.
Sep. 1926; Ruth age 13: She began attending ______ High School in Whiting. The only high
shool listed now is Whiting H.S., so I think the one she attended is now something else.
May 1930; Ruth age 17: She graduated from high school. Her sister Edith was in or had
already graduated from nursing school.
1932?; Ruth age 19-20: She graduated from nursing school as a Registered Nurse. She
worked at St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, Indiana.
Ruth didn't like the name Coy, and went by Ruth. Her memories were that her mother had "a lot of husbands".
Ruth's paternal grandmother Margaret Jane (Fields) Dean was also living in Whiting, Indiana. She died in 1948, so Ruth knew her well. The 1930 Census shows Margaret as head of household, with Ruth's Uncle Charles (her mother's 3rd ex-husband), single, age 43, living with his mother Margaret. Charles is believed to have had a total of five wives.
J.D. Hartsell and Ruth Dean first met in 1936. By 1934 J.D. had gotten a job at the Standard Oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana. The refinery was just east of the residential part of Whiting. J.D. was 24 in the summer of 1934 (birthday in June), Ruth was 21 (birthday in October). J.D. worked with Charles Dean, brother of Ruth Dean. As the story goes, Charles liked J.D. and thought it would be good for J.D. to meet Ruth. We don't know how long they dated before the first letter we know of which was written Nov. 25, 1934. J.D. was living nearby in Whiting on Brown Avenue with his brother Theodore & wife Marcella. Ruth was finishing nursing school and living at the St. Margaret's Hospital Nurse's Home in Hammond. She must have gone home to Whiting on weekends. By Dec. 19, J.D. was living in the Chicago area, 32 miles away, at 1722 Thorndale Ave. It appears he had been laid off from Standard Oil by now and was living with his brother Theodore (who had moved). It was the Great Depression. Then just a month after the first letter, on Dec. 27, 1938, Ruth wrote J.D. a "Dear John" letter, saying that she was in love with Don. It was addressed to J.D.'s Chicago address, but forwarded to Windsor, Illinois. J.D. had gone back home to Windsor, apparently without telling Ruth. J.D. got the Dear John letter in Windsor, but I think things were already amiss between them due to Mom mentioning Don a little too much. Ruth got her Registered Nurse credentials and worked the next three years at St. Margaret's Hospital as a private nurse, not too far away in Hammond, Indiana. She lived in a nurse's quarters.
Three years went by, and neither one had found someone else! During this interim, J.D. was re-hired by Standard Oil. He was back at Theodore's, now living at the south end of Chicago, by Oct. 6, 1936. The address was 10702 Avenue F, Chicago, Illinois. This was 2 miles from were Mom lived on Carolina Ave. J.D.'s first day of work at Standard Oil was Oct. 12, 1936. Sometime in late 1937 or early 1938 J.D. went to Mom's church in Whiting and saw her there. By now Mom was back at home in Whiting, waiting to be called for a case (as a private nurse). A short time later he wrote her the fateful letter, on February 28, 1938. On March 3rd, Ruth replied and they were now back together. J.D. was 27, Ruth was 25. A month later on April 1st or 2nd, J.D. gave Ruth a ring and they were engaged. We had thought Ruth bought her own ring, but she told us late in life and may have been confused. Or J.D. bought an engagement ring, and Ruth bought the wedding ring. They married May 11, 1938 in a simple ceremony at 9:00 P.M. at the Church of Christ parsonage in Whiting, with only the immediate family attending. Son Jim was conceived a month later, about 3 months after they had gotten back together.
Ruth continued to work as a nurse after son Jim was born, and even after 2nd son Bob was born. Ruth had odd hours, and with J.D. working shift work, they had some stretches of time where they didn't see each other much, and wrote notes to each other.
Their first home was an apartment above a store at 1640 Central Avenue in Whiting. When their first child (me) was born in 1939, the landlord said "no children", so before Sept. 1939 they moved to "Seliger's Apartments" at 1828 Indianapolis Blvd., Whiting. In early April of 1944, now with 3 sons, they moved to a house with a yard at 1540 Atchison Ave., Whiting. All these places are still standing as of 2009, and pictures are below.
About early summer of 1946 they moved to a one acre lot at 3646 Calhoun Street, Gary, Indiana. Son Jim (me) was to enter the 2nd grade in the fall. At first, the old outhouse was still in the back yard, even though an indoor bathroom had been added. The septic tank was underground in the back yard. Heating was by a coke-fired furnace in the basement, with a coal bin room next to it, fillable through a window from the outside. There were propane tanks outside the house for the gas stove. At first there was no hot water. Later, J.D. put in a copper coil and burner device that could be turned on for baths. All other hot water heating was on the stove. Later a hot water heater was added, and the furnace was converted to gas-burning. The family attended the First Christian Church, 3 miles away in Griffith, Indiana. J.D. maintained a half-acre garden, and beyond the garden was an apple orchard across the back end of his and neighboring lots. He worked shift work all his life, and retired in 1972(?). J.D. remodeled the entire attic into a usable upstairs with two bedrooms and closets. He built a staircase up through what used to be a closet. In 1976 J.D. and Ruth moved to 1410 E. St. Clair St, Vincennes, Indiana, where son Keith was already established.
J.D. and Ruth had four sons:
James Dwight Hartsell, born Mar. 5, 1939 at Hammond, Indiana.
Robert Dean Hartsell, born Jan. 20, 1941 at Hammond, Indiana.
Edward Arthur Hartsell, born May 30, 1942 at Hammond, Indiana.
Keith Daniel Hartsell, born Dec. 12, 1951 at Gary, Indiana.
For Christmas, J.D. made many wooden toys for his young sons: a working crane, a train with about five cars, and trucks. Nearly all vacations were spent "down home" at Windsor, where his sons loved to explore the barn, walk the fields, and play at the creek.
James Daniel Hartsell died Dec. 31, 2003 at home in Vincennes, Indiana.
Ruth Hartsell died Mar. 17, 2009 at Bridgepointe Health Campus, room 401, Vincennes, Indiana.
They are both buried at Ash Grove (Cochran's Grove) Cemetery, south of Windsor, Illinois.

George W. Dean. The 1880 Census for Pike Co. IN (just south of Daveiss Co.) says that
George's father was born in Maine. The 1850 Census for Campbell Co. KY has a
Robert Dean, age 56, born in Maine (1794). Robert was also in Campbell Co. KY in 1830 and 1840.
George was born in KY in 1829, and was head of household in 1850 in Pendleton County,
just south of Campbell County.
Father of George W. Dean should be in the 1830 KY Census, with George ~1 year old.
In the 1830 Census, Campbell County, Kentucky there is for Robert Dean:
1 male thirty to under forty - Robert Dean, born 1790-1800 (1794)
1 female thirty to under forty - Robert's wife
1 male five to under ten years - could be Thomas, age 7
1 male under five years old - could be Abram, age 4
1 male under five years old - could be Joseph, age 3
1 male under five years old - could be George, age 1, or Hiram as a newborn.
2 females ten to under fifteen - thus Robert married around 1817
(Son Hiram was not yet born.)
(In the next household there was a Thos. Dean.)
SELLERS - 1830's
There should be a Sellers household in the 1830 KY Census since Ellen Sellers was
born there about 1831.
FIELDS - 1830's
WINKLEPLECK - 1830's
SHAFER - 1830's
The USGenWeb Census Project (http://www.rootsweb.com/~census/states.htm) has the
1840 Census for Pendleton County, Kentucky.
DEAN - 1840's
In 1840 George W. Dean was 11 years old, and living in Kentucky. There are no Dean households in the 1840 Pendleton County Kentucky Census, so the family must have been in some other county in Kentucky.
In the 1840 Census for Campbell County, Kentucky there is for Robert Dean:
2 males 40 & under 50 - Robert and ?
1 male 15 & under 20 - Thomas age 17?
1 male 10 & under 15 - Abram, age 14?
1 male 10 & under 15 - Joseph, age 13?
1 male 10 & under 15 - George, age 11, or Hiram, age 10?
1 female 5 & under 10
Robert's wife must have died by 1840.
SELLERS - 1840's
There are no Sellers households in the 1840 Pendleton County Kentucky Census, so the
family must have been in some other county in Kentucky.
Beginning in 1850, Census records show the names of spouse and children, along with their ages, and what state they were born in.
The USGenWeb Census Project (http://www.rootsweb.com/~census/states.htm) has the
1850 Census for Pendleton County, Kentucky.
DEAN - 1850's
George Dean's father could have been born anywhere from 1780 to 1810, or 40-70 years old in 1850. In Pendleton County, Kentucky there was an Able L. Dean, age 51?, Farmer, $1500 real estate, born in Kentucky about 1796. He was in the same district (1) and county as George W. & Ellen Dean. The same census taker did both households. Able's wife Nancy Dean was 60, and daughter Nancy W. Dean was 22. Note that in 1860 Able was listed as Abbe Dean.
From information provided by Barbara Haag, the 1850 Census for Campbell County, KY has:
In the household of Charles and Uris Nichols:
Robert Dean, age 56, born in Maine
Thomas Dean, age 27
Abram Dean, age 24
Joseph Dean, age 23
Hiram Dean, age 20
George W. Dean was 21 in 1850 and married before the census.
Uris Nichols, age 54, born in Maine, may have been Robert's sister.
Campbell County is just north of Pendleton County.
In 1850 George W. Dean was 21 years old. He had recently married Ellen Sellers, age 20, and there were no children as yet. They were living in Pendleton County, Kentucky. George's occupation was Laborer. George and Ellen were both born in Kentucky.
The county seat of Pendleton County is Falmouth, 35 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 42 miles north of Lexington, Kentucky.
Three households away from George was Mary Jane Dean, age 16, in the household of Robert and Nancy Yelton. George's sister?

According to the USGenWeb Census Project, there were other Dean households in 1850 Pendleton County, Kentucky. These could be related, and are listed below. Since George W. Dean was born in Kentucky, that means his parents were in Kentucky in 1829 and should be in the 1830 Census.

The Heritage Quest Online Database has census records for 1860, including Owen County, Kentucky.
DEAN - 1860's
George Dean's father could have been born anywhere from 1780 to 1810, or 50-80 years old in 1860. In Pendleton County, Kentucky there was an Abbe (Able) Dean, age 64, Farmer, $1200 real estate, born in Kentucky about 1796. This puts him dead center in the age range. He was also in the same county as George W. Dean was in 1850, as noted above. Able's wife Nancy Dean was 60, and daughter Nancy W. was 22. Note that in 1850 he was listed as Able Dean.
In 1860 George W. Dean was 31 years old. His occupation was "Tenant", which could mean tenant farmer. His wife Ellen (Sellers) Dean was 27. Benjamin F. Dean was 7 years old. Also in the household were children James W. Dean, age 9, Jane Dean, age 5, and Lucinda Dean, age 1.
The family was living near the town of New Liberty, Owen County, Kentucky, about 30 miles west of Pendleton County, and about halfway between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky. Being listed as "tenant", George must not have owned land.
Census: Owen County, KY, New Liberty P.O.
Enumerated June 23, 1860
Geo W Dean, age 31, Tenant
Ellen Dean (wife), age 27
James W Dean, age 9
B F Dean, age 7
Jane Dean, age 5
Lucinda Dean, age 1
SELLERS - 1860's
In 1860, Ellen (Sellers) Dean was about 29 years old. Since she was born in 1831, her father could have been born anywhere from 1780 to 1810, or 50-80 years old in 1860. He may still have been in Kentucky, if still alive.
There may not be a connection, but in 1860 Pendleton County, Kentucky there was an Isaac Sellers (see also 1870 Sellers below), age 35, Farmer, $1500 real estate, born in Kentucky. Maybe a brother of Ellen? In the household was Nancy, age 47, Catherine, age 12, George, age 10, James, age 15, Alexander, age 13, Eliza J., age 11, and Elizabeth, age 9. All were born in Kentucky.
In the same county was the household of Eleven Sellers, age 24, farm worker, and Sarah E., age 17? Maybe Eleven was Ellen's brother? All were born in Kentucky.
Also in the same county was the household of John Sellers, age 47, Farmer, $1200
real estate. Sarah, age 45, Martha A., age 16, and John J., age 12. All were born in
Kentucky. It would be a stretch, but John could have been Ellen's father.
The Heritage Quest Online Database has census records for 1870.
DEAN - 1870's
In 1870 George W. Dean was 41 years old. His wife Ellen (Sellers) Dean was 39 years old. We don't see a George Dean age 41 in the 1870 Indiana or Kentucky Census.
In 1870, Benjamin Dean, age 17, was not yet married and should be in someone's household. We don't see a Benjamin/Ben/B/BF/B F Dean in the 1870 Indiana or Kentucky Census.
Note that in 1870, in Steele Township, Daveiss County, Indiana, there was a James Dean, age 18 (born about 1852), which could make him Benjamin's brother. He was in the household of Daniel and Elizabeth Gregory. Daniel was 58, had $13,500 real estate, and Elizabeth was 39. In the census, this James Dean was shown as born in Indiana. If he was Benjamin's brother, he would have been born in Kentucky. Sometimes the census takers marked things wrong, however. By 1880, James W. Dean was in Pike County Indiana with his father George W. Dean.
We don't know if there is a connection, but in 1870 Pendleton County, Kentucky, there was a James Dean, age 44 (born about 1826), born in Kentucky, Farmer, $1800 real estate. In the household was Elizabeth, age 43, Matilda, age 18, John F., age 14, Coleman, age 12, Edward, age 8, and Henry, age 4.
On Nov. 6 or 11, 1878, Benjamin married Margaret J. Fields, presumably in Indiana. He was 25, she was 16.
On Dec. 28, 1879, James F. Dean was born.
From familysearch.org, found May 1, 2003, there is
Benjamin Dean married Margaret J. Fields Nov. 6, 1878.
James Francis Dean was born Dec. 28, 1879 in Indiana
SELLERS - 1870's
We don't know if there is a connection, but in 1870 Pendleton County, Kentucky,
Precinct #2, there was an Isaac Sellers, age 40, working on farm, and born in
Kentucky. In the household is Rose, age 21, George, age 19, Kate, age 21,
Alfie, age 4, James, age 2, and Flora, age 4 months. Three households away is
William Fields (see below).
FIELDS - 1870's
Again, we don't know if there is a connection, but 3 households from Isaac Sellers
above, there was a William Fields, age 22 (born about 1848), working on farm, and
born in Kentucky. In the household was Mary A., age 24, Martha A., age 4, and
James H., age 1.
The Heritage Quest Online Database DOES NOT have census records for 1880.
DEAN - 1880's
In 1880, George W. Dean was 51 years old. His wife Ellen (Sellers) Dean was 49 years old. They were living in Clay Township, Pike County, Indiana. Pike County is just south of Daveiss County, Indiana, and just east of Gibson County, Indiana. George's occupation was "working on farm". Two of their children were in their household: Melissa Jane Dean, age 23, and Martha E. Dean, age 13.
In 1880, Benjamin Dean was 27 years old, married to Margaret Jane Fields, age 17, with one son James F. Dean, age 4 months. They were living in Washington Township, Gibson County, Indiana. Benjamin's occupation was "farmer". Since he was listed as a farmer, he probably owned land.
In 1880, Benjamin's brother James W. Dean was in Clay Township, Pike County, Indiana, presumably near their father George W. Dean. James' occupation was "working on farm". Perhaps both George and James were working on the same farm.
Census: Clay Township, Pike County, Indiana

DEAN - 1930's
From Dick Fields' email message, verified by Jim Hartsell:
Census: Whiting, Lake County, Indiana:
Margaret (Fields) Dean, age 67, head of household, widowed, home value $2,500,
was 16 when she married, occupation "none", son Charles was living with her, he
was 43, single, was a Helper at an oil refinery.
Census: Hammond, Lake County, Indiana:
Rufus Dean, age 31, Laborer, Oil Refinery
Esther Dean, wife, age 28
Louise Dean, daughter, age 10
Maxine Dean, daughter, age 7
Eugene Dean, son, age 3
Could not find Mary Dean in Indiana. Should be in Whiting. Also tried Edith Dean and Arthur Dean.
Years ago, my mother Ruth (Dean) Hartsell had a memory of her grandmother Dean being
Margaret (Fields) Dean. On May 1, 2003 I found on familysearch.org a
Benjamin Dean who married Margaret J. Fields on November 6, 1878.
The 1880 Census shows the family in Washington Township, Gibson County,
Indiana. Gibson County is directly south of Knox County. Washington Township, about
10 miles NE of Princeton, contains the communities of Buena Vista, Mt. Olympus, and
Wheeling. James Francis Dean was born on December 28, 1879, almost 13 months after his
parents marriage.
An 11/15/2002 entry posted at
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Dean::fields::4684.html
by Saundra Carr shows these children of William (b. 1823) & Margaret
(Potter/Smith) Fields: Sarah Fields who married Reo Winklepleck, and Margaret Fields who
married Ben Dean. Saundra also shows William Fields buried at Crawford,
Indiana. Plus, her ancestor Francis Marion Fields' second wife was Melissa Jane Dean of
Daviess County, Indiana. On March 14, 2006, I got an email from cousin Susan Garlitch, great-granddaughter of James Francis Dean through James' daughter Edith and Edith's daughter Sharon. She sent information she had gotten from Dick Fields of Wisconsin. I then got in touch with Dick. Susan mentioned an Abiel Dean in 1860 Boone County Kentucky with a son Benjamin 7 years old. This Abiel Dean turned out not to be our ancestor. Barbara Haag (below) pointed out that in 1880 Abiel's son Benjamin was married to Elizabeth and living next to Abiel, while at the same time our Benjamin and wife Margaret were in Gibson County Indiana. NEW March, 2006: I got much information from Dick Fields of Wisconsin, descendant of William Hale Fields through George M. Fields. From him I got the ancestry of William Hale Fields, and Margaret Ann Smith. Margaret Jane Fields (d. 1948) is buried at Odon, IN. Margaret and Benjamin had four boys, Charles (b. 1887), Herman, Rufus and James Francis (my ancestor). Margaret Ann (Smith) Fields died in 1899 in Crawford County, IN, and is buried at Potter Cemetery, Eckerty, IN. Margaret's parents were William B. Smith (b. 1783, d. 1868), and Elizbeth Friedley (b. 1790, d. 1866). Margaret's grandparents were Jacob Friedley (b. 1755) and Elizabeth Moyer (b. 1760, d. 1835). William Hale Fields was orphaned as a small boy and raised by a Kepley. Also, from Dick Fields: William Hale Fields was born Jan. 15, 1823 in Harrison County, IN and died Feb. 13, 1863 at a military hospital in LaGrange, TN. (By Jim: I have that he died from wounds in the Civil War.) Margaret Ann was born in 1824 in Crawford County, IN and died in 1899, Crawford County, IN. They are both buried at Potter Cemetery, Eckerty, IN. Their youngest child, Margaret Jane Fields, which William never saw, was born Sep. 25, 1862 and died Feb. 18, 1948. Margaret Jane's grandparents were William B. Smith (1783-1868), born in VA, and Elizabeth Friedley (1760-1835), born in VA. From my research her grandmother was not an Indian (as thought by some). Margaret Jane's great grandparents, on her mother's side, were Jacob Friedley and Elizabeth Moyer, both from PA. More from Dick Fields: I have very limited information on Benjamin Dean, but his middle name was Franklin. From the 1930 Federal Census, Lake County, Whiting, IN, Margaret (Jane) was the head of the household, 67 years old, widowed, owned her home valued at $2,500, was 16 years old when she married. Her occupation was given as "none". Her son Charles (brother of deceased James F. Dean) was living with her in 1930, he was 43 years old, single, and worked at an oil refinery. Back to me (Jim): This Whiting Indiana information is very interesting. My grandmother Mary Magdalene (Winklepleck) Dean (widowed) moved her family to Whiting before 1935. Did they live with her late husband's mother-in-law Margaret Jane (also widowed)? One or both of Mary's sons (Charles and Arthur) also worked at an oil refinery, Standard Oil. One of them either hired or was the supervisor for my Dad (James Daniel Hartsell) at Standard Oil. This is how Dad met Mom (Ruth Dean). Mom's Uncle Charles would have been born in 1930-43=1887, eight years younger than his brother James F. Dean. April, 2006: On April 16, 2006 I got an email from my 2nd cousin Barbara (Marlowe) Haag. She is descended from B.F. Dean's son Rufus Dean through Rufus' daughter Louise. Barbara thinks that Benjamin Dean's parents were George W. and Ellen (Sellers) Dean of 1860 Owens County Kentucky. I agree. They had a son B.F. Dean, age 7 in 1860, thus born about 1853 which is the correct year. May 2, 2006: Barbara sent an image of Benjamin Dean's obituary, which is on this web page. May 2, 2006: Barbara noted that George's father was born in Maine, and mother born in Kentucky (1880 census). She's looking at a Robert Dean in the 1850 Campbell County, Kentucky census, who was born in 1794 in Maine. He was living with the Charles & Uris Nichols family, and Uris may have been Robert's sister, since she was also born in Maine. I then found a Robert Dean in 1830 and 1840 Campbell County, Kentucky, with a son George's age. In 1830 his wife was listed, but not in 1840. By the age of his oldest child, he must have married about 1817. Near the top of this web page is my presentation of Barbara's information in chart form. May 8, 2006: Email from Barbara Haag. The 1880 census says George W. Dean's father was born in Maine and his mother born in Kentucky. The possible father of George W. Dean could be Robert Dean, born 1794 in Maine. In 1850 Campbell County (just north of Pendleton County), Kentucky, Robert Dean was living with the Charles Nichols family. Robert has 4 sons listed, Thomas 27, Abram 24, Joseph 23, and Hiram 20. George was 21 in 1850 and married before the census. Charles Nichols wife is Uris, also born in Maine. I (Barbara) suspect that Uris is Robert's sister. She is 54, Robert is 56. No wife listed for Robert. She must have died, which is why Robert is living with his sister's family. May 16, 2006: Email from Saundra Carr. (Excerpts) Margaret Janes Fields was born Sept. 25, 1862, from the Genealogy Library in Crawford, IN. Jacob Friedley died 1847 (he married Elizabeth Moyer). Jacob C. Winklepleck and Elizabeth Bair married in 1837 in Ohio. Father of Jacob Shaffer 1818-1900 was John Frederick Shafer. Barbara Shafer was born 1845 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. (Jim: south of Canton, Ohio, and there is a town named Dover.) Sarah Freed was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio (wife of Nathan Winklepleck). Census 1920 Daviess County Indiana, household next to James F. Dean is perhaps Charles Everett Freed 1883-1978.
June 10, 2006: Email from Barbara (Marlowe) Haag. Barbara has worked on all the research
with her sister Kathy Mallory.

Christian Winklepleck (written on back of photo)
Born about 1785
Great-great-grandfather of Ruth (Dean) Hartsell.
Written on back of photo:
Mary Magdalene Wyant
Wife of Christian Winklepleck
Born Nov. 22, 1786
Died July 25, 1867
unknown: Jacob C. Winklepleck (1814-1890)?
Jacob Josiah Winklepleck (b. 1834, and married Barbara Shafer)?
(see man on left in photo below)
I came across the picture below in April, 2005. Showing James F. Dean with the Winkleplecks,
it offers a lot of information and clues. James Dean's father Benjamin moved to Daviess County
(Odon area) from Gibson County before 1900, and by 1898 according to the picture.
Writing on back says: "Taken June, 1898, Odon, IN, James F. Dean."
That would be James F. Dean on the right, at age 18.
The young woman third from left appears to be Mary Magdalene Winklepleck at age 19.
The man on the left looks like the one in the photo above; he must be Jacob J. Winklepleck
(at age 63), and the woman next to him would be Barbara Shafer (at age 52).
The old man at center must be Barbara's father Jacob Shafer
(at age 80), who died two years later in 1900.
The original picture (below) shows a younger male on the left with 3 horses; he is
probably William Winklepleck, youngest son of Jacob & Barbara, and who died at age 18.
The full 1898 picture, but with top cropped off.
The house doesn't appear to be the "Shafer homestead" house below.
NW part of Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana, 1997.
Going north from Odon on farm road 900E (N. West St.) between sect. 19 & 20:
About 0.8 mile north is Walnut Hill Cemetery just before farm road 1400N.
A total of 2 miles north is Pleasant Hill Cemetery at farm road 1550N.
At farm road 1600N is the former Herron's School.
Going right (east) on farm road 1600N, just past where the road swings
south, is the childhood homesite of Ruth (Dean) Hartsell (circled "X").

About 1924, 5 years after the death of James F. Dean,
the family moved to Whiting, Indiana.

Below is the only clue we have of Dad's first car, at the farm near Windsor, IL. It has an Indiana
license plate, and we were the only ones living in Indiana. He bought the used car April 17, 1940,
with 28,500 miles on it. This picture was taken around 1940-41, and cropped from a larger picture.
The following pictures show a restored 1937 Deluxe Plymouth P4 2-door sedan. 7,926 were built.
It cost $640 new in 1937, so Dad must have paid about $300 for his. It had a 6 cylinder engine,
201 cu. in., and 82 hp (standard), or 65 hp (economy). Dad's car was probably brown like this.
See the specs at www.ply33.com/models/P4.
